In another interesting turn of political events, American troops are now leaving Syria, according to new reports. The return home of the troops comes as President Trump professes the defeat of ISIS.
A Closer Look at the Exit of U.S. Troops from Syria
The decision to bring the troops home comes after a series of grueling years dedicated to taking out the threats in Syria. Some of the most notable promises Trump made during the 2016 election were to bring home the troops and vanquish ISIS.
Earlier today, the president posted the following tweet regarding the latest development:
We have defeated ISIS in Syria, my only reason for being there during the Trump Presidency.

White House press secretary Sarah Sanders also shared information regarding this latest victory. Earlier today, she delivered the following statements to the press:
“Five years ago, ISIS was a very powerful and dangerous force in the Middle East, and now the United States has defeated the territorial caliphate. These victories over ISIS in Syria do not signal the end of the Global Coalition or its campaign. We have started returning United States troops home as we transition to the next phase of this campaign. The United States and our allies stand ready to re-engage at all levels to defend American interests whenever necessary.”
Throughout the 2016 election, Trump faced skepticism from his political opponents regarding claims that he would defeat ISIS if elected as president. At this time, Trump is now enduring criticism for this move; some Americans believe that ISIS is not truly defeated, while others believe it’s simply too soon to bring the troops home.
The Backlash
Lawmakers on both sides of the aisle have expressed concerns about the withdrawal of troops from Syria. In recent hours, conservative lawmakers took to social media, slamming the move as too premature. Others have compared the military withdrawal to a foreign policy blunder which Obama would have made. Ultimately, only time will tell what’s to come from the exit of American troops from Syria.
