Trump’s Lead on DeSantis Grows in Likely GOP Primary Race

Former President Donald Trump’s lead over his biggest potential competitor for the 2024 Republican nomination, Florida Governor Ron DeSantis, has grown even bigger, according to the results from a new poll.

Trump’s Lead Doubles in One Month

Trump announced his 2024 White House candidacy already in November 2022, a week after the midterm elections. DeSantis, however, hasn’t declared his presidential ambitions yet, despite frequent reports that he is preparing a bid.

Florida’s governor, a former Trump ally, is widely anticipated to announce his candidacy in May, after the spring session of the Florida legislature codifies more of his policy initiatives.

The latest Fox News national poll now shows Trump already has a 30-point lead among Republican voters over DeSantis – 54% to 24%.

The former president’s lead has thus doubled, compared to February when the same poll showed he was favored for the nomination by 43% of Republicans vs. 28% for DeSantis.

The same public opinion survey showed no other current or likely GOP presidential bidder polled in the double digits.

Former Vice President Mike Pence remained third with 6% support, while former US Rep. Liz Cheney and former US Ambassador to the UN Nikki Haley both scored 3%. Texas Republican Governor Greg Abbott received 2%, while any other bidders got 1% or less.

So far, only Trump, Haley, and conservative author and entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy have made their candidacies official.

Most Democratic Voters Don’t Want More of Sleepy Joe

The Fox News poll found the only demographic in which Trump didn’t gain against DeSantis in the past month were white men holding college degrees. In that group, Florida’s governor gained 12 percentage points.

The survey also revealed among the voters who supported Trump in the last presidential election, 60% remain in favor of his nomination. Most of the rest, however, 25%, now favor DeSantis, while 5% favor Mike Pence.

The Fox News survey discovered among Democratic primary voters, 52% were against having Joe Biden as the 2024 party nominee, while 44% supported the embattled current president.

Last month, 53% of Democrats wanted another candidate, while 37% backed Sleepy Joe.
