On Friday, President Trump announced that a deal will pass to temporarily reopen the government. The bill will last through February 15, 2019, thus allowing three weeks for a resolution to be reached on border security, according to The Daily Caller News Foundation.
A Closer Look at the Deal to Reopen Government
President Trump issued the following remarks to the press yesterday about the deal which will temporarily reopen government:
“I am very proud to announce that we have reached a deal today to end the shutdown and reopen the federal government. I am asking Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell to put this proposal on the floor immediately. After 36 days of spirited debate and dialogue, I have seen and heard from enough Democrats and Republicans that they are willing to put partisanship aside, I think, and put the security of the American people first.”
The deal comes after the longest government shutdown in the history of American politics. Since the inception of the shutdown, Democrats have faced criticism for refusing to work with the president and going on vacations while federal workers struggled financially.
What Happens Now?
The new deal comes after President Trump and Democratic leaders have been unable to come to an agreement on border security. Although the deal is in effect, both the president and the Democrats still maintain their positions. Trump is determined to garner the necessary funding to build a physical barrier at the Southern border, while Democrats are hellbent on not providing the funds. The government is projected to experience another shut down on February 15, 2019, if both sides are not able to reach a resolution this time around.
