The partisan congressional power balance is no joke. It matters if Republicans or Democrats have the majority in the House and Senate.
A chamber controlled by Republicans under a Democratic presidency can help stop disastrous bills from passing. Likewise, a chamber controlled by Democrats under a Republican presidency has the power to oppose and stall necessary reforms.
Right now, Democrats have control of the Senate and the presidency, while Republicans control the House. Coincidentially, Democrats are also looking to expand their congressional power with 2024 on the horizon.
That explains why GOP Sen. Ted Cruz has a Democrat aiming to take his congressional heat, per Politico.
Enter Rep. Colin Allred
Rep. Colin Allred, on Wednesday, formally declared his run for Senate. In an announcement video, Allred made his case as to why voters of Texas should send him to Congress, while sending Cruz packing.

Allred also relied on trashing Cruz, claiming that the Texas Republican is self-serving and not keeping the best interests of his constituents in mind. Allred’s 2024 challenge of Cruz comes after the GOP senator previously ran against Texas Democrat Beto O’Rourke in 2018.
A Critical Election For Republicans
Right now, Republicans are a few seats shy of controlling the Senate. If Democrats are successful in taking more Senate seats, they’ll be that much closer to a supermajority.
Meanwhile, Democrats have been targeting the Lone Star State for quite some time, in the hopes of turning it blue. One major test of whether or not Texas is still a red state will be if voters reelect Cruz or elect Allred.

The 2022 midterms did not go very well for Republicans, especially in light of the economy and other real challenges happening under the Biden administration. 2024 is now the chance for Republicans to turn this around, expand their congressional power, and have Democrats on defense.
