Schumer’s PAC Receiving Millions in Dark Money Just Before Elections

Dark money groups associated with Democrats are coming to rescue vulnerable liberal candidates for the Senate midterm elections.

Currently, Democrats are striving hard to maintain their slim majority in the Senate, which is urging them to take last-minute controversial campaign donations.

Dems Looking Desperate to Win Senate

On October 12, a dark money nonprofit group, Majority Forward, which does not disclose its donors, donated $20 million to a Political Action Committee (PAC) associated with Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer.

Schumer’s PAC, named SMP, received most of its funds from Majority Forward in this year’s election cycle. As per the records, Majority Forward donated more than $47 million to SMP for the 2022 midterm elections.

Majority Funds and SMP are closely related to each other; both entities share office space and employees in Washington, DC. The president of SMP, J.B Poersch, is a close friend of Schumer.

Schumer is accepting millions of dollars of controversial donations at a time when he has repeatedly criticized the involvement of dark money in politics.

In September, Schumer claimed dark money is cancerous to American politics, adding Americans should know who is spending millions of dollars to destroy democracy.

Majority Forward was established in 2015 as an organization to increase voter turnout, but since then, it has accepted a whopping amount of money from hidden donors. From July 2020 to June 2021, the group accumulated nearly $105 million in donations to promote liberal causes.

Previously, Schumer even demanded that right-leaning dark donation groups should reveal their donors to protect American democracy. Schumer also backed For the People Act, which contains provisions to disclose all the donors who contribute more than $10,000 to any political organization.

Caitlin Sutherland, the executive director of the nonpartisan organization, Americans for Public Trust, noted Democrats always criticize dark money groups unless these groups are donating to liberal causes.

Sutherland further added Schumer’s attempt to get the donation of $20 million from dark money groups depicts the hypocrisy of the Democrat Party.

Nearly All Liberal Politicians Oppose Dark Money

Apart from Schumer, many other liberal senators have also lashed out at Republicans for receiving dark donations.

For instance, Democratic Senator Sheldon Whitehouse asked the right-leaning group, Judicial Crisis Network, to reveal the list of donors contributing more than $10,000 to the group.

Judicial Crisis Network was campaigning in favor of conservative Justices Brett Kavanaugh and Neil Gorsuch at the time of their nomination when liberal senators asked the group to release the list of its donors.

However, none of the liberal senators asked anything from the left-leaning judicial groups Demand Justice and the Alliance for Justice, which pressured Biden to nominate Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson to the Supreme Court.

Democrats are extremely vulnerable to losing the Senate, as multiple close races turn in Republicans’ favor right before the midterm elections.
