Despite contrasting evidence, members of the Democrat Party continue to maintain that gun control is the most effective measure to end mass shootings. Furthermore, leftists show no signs of relenting their attacks on the National Rifle Association (NRA), an organization whose members have never once committed a mass shooting. In the wake of recent shootings over the past few weeks, Democrats have renewed their calls for gun control.
Leftists across America are all for gun control, but Democrat leaders in Congress are realizing that this will be easier said than done with a Republican Senate and Republican president.
Therefore, Democrat leaders Nancy Pelosi and Chuck Schumer wrote a leader to Trump; in this letter, Pelosi and Schumer urged the president to get on board with tighter gun control legislation and persuade the Senate to vote accordingly, as documented by Fox News.
A Closer Look at the Written Appeal to President Trump
In essence, Pelosi and Schumer want President Trump to take action for a cause which will benefit them politically. The bill which these Democrat leaders are championing deals with background checks on each and every gun sale. The Democrat Party passed this bill in the House of Representatives earlier this year, but the red Senate ultimately shut it down. In the wake of recent mass shootings, Pelosi and Schumer maintain that their bill is more necessary and relevant than ever.
The Trump administration has previously indicated a willingness to work with Democrats on this matter; however, as explained by White House principal deputy press secretary Hogan Gidley, the Democrat Party is not truly interested in reaching a middle ground.
As a matter of fact, Gidley directly explained that Democrat leaders are unwilling to work with this current administration unless they get everything they’re asking for.
The White House deputy press secretary described the Democrats’ attitudes regarding gun control as follows:
“No, unless you’re for saying to Hell with the Second Amendment and taking guns away from law-abiding citizens, then you are responsible for the deaths of people across the country!”
The End of the Charade
It’s important to note that Pelosi and Schumer’s appeal to the president comes as multiple 2020 Democrats have openly expressed their party’s true stance on gun control.
Beto O’Rourke responded to conservatives’ concerns about the government taking their guns by stating “that’s exactly what we’re going to do.” Cory Booker, another 2020 Democrat, is also supportive of a mandatory gun buyback program; this would inherently penalize lawful gun owners while doing absolutely nothing about criminals who don’t abide by gun control laws.
If Pelosi and Schumer truly wanted to convince President Trump that they want so-called common sense gun control, they should have gotten ahold of Democrats who are now flagrantly telling lawful citizens that their Second Amendment rights will be violated.
