Igor Danchenko is a Russian citizen and US resident who was the source for the fake Steele dossier about President Trump’s connections with Putin.
The Russian had compromised or non-existent sources while getting paid $200,000 by the FBI for his services, it emerged during his trial.
Lying to the FBI, Getting Lavish Payouts
Igor Danchenko has been put on trial for lying to the FBI after being exposed in 2021 as the “source” behind the infamous “dirty dossier” compiled in 2016 by former British intelligence agent Christopher Steele.
The Steele Dossier, a 35-page unfinished document drafted by Steele for the Democratic National Committee and the campaign of Hillary Clinton in the second half of 2016, claimed Trump and his presidential campaign were in collusion with Russia.
The dossier also contained various lies about Trump, including that he used Moscow prostitutes for “golden showers,” and Russian intelligence service FSB had compromising videos and other materials of him.
The Steele Dossier was leaked to the American public in January 2017 by Buzzfeed.
Danchenko, a graduate of the University of Louisville, Kentucky, and Georgetown University, is being tried on five counts of supplying false information to the FBI with respect to the Steele Dossier.
Danchenko worked since the earlier 2000s for the Brookings Institution as a Russian and Eurasian analyst.
The prosecution accused the Russian, a US green card holder, of fabricating one of his sources while refusing to reveal another alleged source when the FBI interviewed him.

Passing on Trump ‘Intelligence Information’ from Non-Existent Sources
The new revelations about the “Russia analyst” in the Steele dossier affair have come after Kevin Helson, a special agent of the FBI, testified in Danchenko’s trial, The Daily Mail reported.
Heston revealed Danchenko received some $200,000 in payments from the FBI over the course of more than three years.
The testimony comes after the years-long investigation by John Durham, the special counsel appointed by President Trump, into the previous “Trump – Russia” probe.
Heston told the court in Alexandria, VA, that Danchenko received a payment of $3,000 just for one meeting with the FBI.
Durham’s investigation emphasized the FBI used the infamous Steele dossier to get surveillance warrants on Carter Page, a former Trump advisor on foreign policy.
According to Helson’s testimony, when Danchenko got closed as an FBI source, he put in for $346,000 more, but the agency didn’t approve that compensation.
Helson’s revelations come after earlier Brian Auten, an FBI supervisory analyst, testified the agency offered former British counterintelligence chief Steele $1 million cash to prove the claims he made in the dossier.
However, Steele failed to offer evidence and the agency never paid the hefty award.
Igor Danchenko appears to have been highly compromised as a source of intelligence information after one of his own sources – Charles Donald Jr., a Democrat PR executive – admitted to feeding him lies he got from television.
When in August 2016, Danchenko was seeking information about the resignation of Paul Manafort as Trump’s campaign chair, Dolan testified he fed him publically available information. Danchenko, in turn, passed that on to the creator of the Steele dossier.
Dolan testified further that he had no idea why Danchenko was interested in the causes of Paul Manafort’s resignation.
NEW: An FBI agent & a former FBI analyst both testified today that they wanted the Mueller team to launch an investigation into Clinton ally Chuck Dolan related to his ties to Steele dossier source Igor Danchenko but that the Mueller team refused to do so.https://t.co/VfQJy99Xw1
