Controversial Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene created some friction during a House Homeland Security Committee hearing on Wednesday, asserting that Rep. Eric Swalwell engaged in a “romantic liaison with a Chinese undercover agent.”
Consequently, Democrats fruitlessly demanded the removal of her statement from the official record.
Greene’s Retort to Swalwell’s Criticism
Greene’s remark surfaced shortly after Swalwell criticized her for “anti-police language” and displayed a printed copy of her tweet advertising “Defund the FBI” merchandise, which she attributed to alleged bureau partiality.
“Remarkably amusing coming from someone who maintained an intimate relationship with a Chinese spy—widely known,” Greene retorted, alluding to Swalwell’s supposed affair with the believed Chinese operative Fang Fang.

“Let her words be struck from the record,” implored Rep. Dan Goldman (D-NY).
Committee chairman Mark Green (R-TN) inquired which words Goldman sought to expunge from the record, to which the Democrat representing Lower Manhattan and Brownstone Brooklyn responded, “All statements uttered by the gentlelady from Georgia.”
“Please be more precise,” Green countered.
“Claims of involvement with a Chinese undercover agent. Such remarks delve into personal matters,” Goldman clarified.
Following a few minutes of contemplation, Green announced, “The chair has determined that the aforementioned words shall not be removed from the record.”

Uncertainty Around Swalwell’s Connection to Fang
Democrats voiced their objections, with Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-MS) expressing discontent, stating “There’s no doubt regarding the gentlelady’s statement. We’ve never encountered such an accusation against any member, and I’m shocked by it. It should be an embarrassment to us all.”
Upon appealing the ruling, Republicans on the committee voted to set aside the motion, effectively dismissing it and retaining the allegation in the official meeting transcript.
Swalwell’s office refrained from providing immediate comments when approached by The Post.
It remains uncertain whether Swalwell ever explicitly denied an intimate connection with Fang, who reportedly returned to China in 2015 as US authorities became cognizant of her activities.
In 2015, the FBI delivered a “defensive briefing” to Swalwell after Fang purportedly raised funds for his campaign and arranged an intern for his office.
