‘If you can’t beat them, insult them’ appears to be the latest mantra of the left. On multiple occasions, left-wing figureheads in media and other areas have taken it upon themselves to insult the president and the Americans who support him. From referring to Trump supporters as “deplorables,” an “army of trolls,” and now members of a cult, Democrats aren’t even trying to hide their loathing for political dissent anymore.
Ex-CBS news anchor Dan Rather is the latest to openly go after Americans who favor the current president. Yesterday, Rather declared that support for Trump is “cultish” and “all about him.” Rather made these comments on CNN and moreover professed that support for President Trump isn’t about policy or a standard of politics, according to Breitbart News.
A Close Review of Rather’s Take on Trump Supporters
When sounding off about how cultish he believes Trump supporters are, Rather compared the president’s following to those of past presidents, such as Ronald Reagan and Franklin Roosevelt. However, the former news anchor opined that while Reagan and Roosevelt “stood for something in terms of policy,” Trump doesn’t.
Of course, this assessment is utterly biased and inarguably untrue. Since his time in politics, Trump has stood behind policies to better the lives of people in this country and make America great again. Examples of the aforementioned policies include lowering taxes, restoring jobs to the economy, lowering unemployment, ending illegal immigration, making strides forward in criminal justice reform, and much more.
Rather’s assertion that Trump supporters are just blindly following the president with no reason or regard is just ludicrous. It also speaks to how out-of-touch Rather is with such a majority of Americans. Apparently, the left still has yet to learn that vilifying and insulting Trump supporters and others who challenge leftist dogma won’t do them any favors.
The Ignorance of the Left
The statements from Rather this past weekend only serve as a testament to how much the left has to learn. They certainly won’t educate themselves by denouncing anyone who doesn’t see the country or the world in the way they do.
If Democrats are truly interested in understanding why so many Americans support the president, they should try speaking with Trump supporters. This means entering into the conversation with an open mind and the willingness to hear a different perspective. Trump supporters are not a monolith or a cult, despite what Rather and other Democrats have deluded themselves into believing.
