Recent years have seen growing concerns about not just government corruption, but also the government being too hasty to act in certain cases. When an overinflated government makes mistakes, the average person can — and often does — suffer accordingly.
It’s not a good situation. Yet, history has shown that this can happen for many different reasons. As time passes, more people have begun fighting back against overzealous governments, namely within a court of law.
In the case of Minnesota resident Geraldine Tyler, 94, her choice to fight back against Hennepin County paid off big time, as reported by National Review.
A Major Victory to Behold
Hennepin County took possession of Tyler’s home because of a $15,000 tax bill that she owed. However, this repossession was granted as unlawful by the Supreme Court.
While the older woman owed $15,000 in back taxes, her home was worth a sweeping $40,000. This is almost three times what she owed the government, but Hennepin County didn’t take this into account.
The Supreme Court on Thursday unanimously sided with a 94-year-old grandmother who lost her home to foreclosure and then lost the equity she had in the property when the county sold it and kept the profit.

The Supreme Court’s verdict also made note that the precedent set by Hennepin County was not only dangerous, but opened the door to additional violations of the Fifth Amendment.
In a time where bipartisanship is becoming rarer, Republicans and Democrats alike largely sided with Tyler in this particular case.
The Moral of the Story
In this case, the greatest lesson is that Americans have to always be on guard for a government that is out of control.
Really gives heft to the phrase "taxation is theft!" The practice is called “home equity theft” and it (spoiler alert) *USED TO* exist in 13 states & DC. @PacificLegal has led the charge against it. Read all about their efforts here https://t.co/sBqSU63e37

Had Tyler not taken this issue all the way to the Supreme Court, she never would have gotten the verdict that affirmed the county’s repossession of her property as wrong.
Some people may even argue that the Minnesota community was counting on the elderly woman not having the resources or the spirit to fight back against them in a court of law.
