As the fight over the border wall continues to intensify, new reports about the Pentagon’s management of funds have come to light.
According to The Daily Caller News Foundation, the Defense Department reports that the Pentagon essentially allowed tens of billions of dollars go to waste; with that amount of capital, President Trump could have funded his border wall multiple times over.
A Closer Look at the “Expired” Funds
Since 2013, the Defense Department handed over a total of $27.7 billion dollars to the United States Treasury. While this may seem shocking to readers, the reason behind their decision will be even more appalling, especially in light of what’s currently happening in politics. Due to the Pentagon’s failure to make use of the billions “within the legal timeframes,” the Defense Department was mandated, by law, to fork over the capital.
New reports about the $27.7 billion dollars have raised new questions about manners in which the funds could currently be used. Mark Tushnet, a Harvard law professor, recently informed the press that Trump may have the option of using the $27.7 to build his border wall; however, this is only if he declares a national emergency.
Review Tushnet’s commentary for yourself:
“My instinct is to say that if he declares a national emergency and uses this pot of unappropriated money for the wall, he’s on very solid legal ground.”
The Silver Lining
At this point, the news of the $27.7 billion dollars which have yet to be used just may turn out to be the saving grace. America’s government has entered the 20th day of the shutdown. If the closure of the government lasts until Saturday, it will officially break the record of the longest government shutdown in this nation.
It’s obvious that the Democrats are still dead set on stonewalling President Trump and refusing to work with him. Democrats claim to care about federal workers who will not receive pay, but if they really cared, Schumer and Pelosi would put their egos aside and go fund the wall. Their refusal to do this speaks louder than any virtual signaling press conference or faux moral outrage.
