California State Senator Scott Weiner introduced a provision to SB 145 to revise the state’s panel code concerning sex offenders.
SB 145 was signed into law by Governor Gavin Newsom in 2020, allowing judges to determine if a sex offender has to register in statutory rape cases.
A Predator’s Paradise
Weiner’s proposal would allow pedophiles to avoid being cataloged on the sex offender registry, with the condition being they were less than 10 years older than the minor they molested.

This bill aims to end “prejudice against LGBTQ individuals on the sex offender registry” said Weiner. “It would exempt from mandatory registration any individual convicted of particular crimes involving minors if the individual is not more than 10 years older.”
The California state Senate, comprising 32 Democrats and eight Republicans, passed the bill 23-10.
Rightful Pushback
Republican Assemblyman Steven Cho spoke out against Weiner’s bill as completely inappropriate to be entertained. Cho was pointing out how a 24-year-old male athletics coach would be exempt from being with a 15-year-old female student.

Across the aisle, Lorena Gonzalez, a Democrat, voiced her opposition.
In doing so, she explained that as a mother, she could not understand how the deranged concept of consensual sex between a 24 and 15-year-old could be even remotely rationalized, let alone legislated in Congress.
“We should not ever give up on this belief that children are not, and should be in any way, subject to a predator. At the end of the day, that is what it is,” said Gonzalez.
Research has found that convicted male pedophiles prey on children between the ages of six and 17. In addition, men and women alike tend to have an interest in both toddlers and infants.
Beginning on college campuses, the notion of a “minor-attracted person” has begun catching steam, which has caused concern about the normalization of pedophilia in society.
