During just this year alone, there’s been a lot of talk about potential candidates in the 2024 presidential election. However, most of these candidates are Republicans.
Right now, GOP members who are expected to become 2024 presidential candidates are Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, former South Carolina Gov. Nikki Haley, ex-Vice President Mike Pence, and ex-Secretary of State Mike Pompeo.
Some other Republican governors have been named as well.
However, Democrats are facing somewhat of a question mark when it comes to 2024. The State of the Union address last week was largely projected as the time Joe Biden would announce his intention to seek reelection.
Though Biden did not confirm this. Therefore, Democrats are left having to figure out what they’ll do if the current president does not pursue a second term, as explained by NY Mag.
A Huge Question Mark for the Democrat Party
Despite the lack of delivery during last week’s State of the Union address, Biden is still widely expected to announce his 2024 presidential campaign. Previously, the president has hinted that he intends to run for another term in the White House.
However, in the event that Biden fails to meet these expectations and does not run for office, there are a series of different possibilities. First, Vice President Kamala Harris could end up stepping in to win the Democratic nomination.

In 2020, before joining Biden as his vice presidential candidate, Harris ran for the presidential nomination. However, if Harris’ potential 2024 campaign goes the same way it did in 2020, then it would leave the door open to other Democrats.
In the event that Biden doesn’t seek reelection and Harris fails to secure the nomination, then other Democrats who ran in 2020 could very well try to win this time around.
That could mean Elizabeth Warren, Bernie Sanders, Pete Buttigieg, etc. running again in 2024 and trying to get the Democrat Party to nominate them.
The Democratic governors of both Illinois and California have also been viewed as possible candidates in 2024, especially if Biden declines to run.
Wait and See
Right now, a lot of 2024 presidential election polls have been conducted with the assumption that Biden will go for another term. These polls usually pit the current president against both former President Trump and current Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis.

At this point, however, it remains to be seen what situation Democrats will be facing in 2024. The decision Biden makes about whether or not to run for reelection will ultimately have broad and long-lasting impacts on his party.
