There’s absolutely no denying the repeated hits which Joe Biden’s 2020 presidential campaign has experienced. From various blunders to missteps from his aides, Biden is struggling to convince the Democrat Party that he is competent enough to face off against President Trump in a general election. The former vice president has furthermore taken heat for repeatedly stammering and fumbling when he speaks, ticks which are sure to land him in big trouble if he ever gets on a debate stage with President Trump.
Biden’s aspirations to become the next president have not been aided by his previous remarks regarding Ukraine either. The former vice president once boasted about threatening to withhold financial aid from the country unless their government fired a leading prosecutor. It’s worth noting that the prosecutor whom Biden insisted be fired was investigating a Ukrainian gas company which his son, Hunter Biden worked for.
In light of the aforementioned situations, Biden’s support in a new poll conducted by Quinnipiac University has slipped, with fellow 2020 contender Elizabeth Warren in the lead.
Reviewing Data from the Quinnipiac University Poll
The latest poll shows that Warren is currently leading Democrats and left-leaning Independents at 27%. Biden, by contrast, is trailing behind Warren with 25% support from left-leaning Independents and Democrats. It’s important to note that Warren’s surpassing of Biden comes after months of being in second or third place.
Tim Malloy, a polling analyst for Quinnipiac University shared his thoughts on the explanation behind Warren’s sudden surge.
“After trailing Biden by double digits since March in the race for the Democratic nomination, Warren catches Biden. We now have a race with two candidates at the top of the field, and they’re leaving the rest of the pack behind.”
“Dig a little deeper, and the reasons behind Warren’s rise become more clear. She generates a lot of excitement as a potential nominee. On top of that, half of Democrats want a presidential candidate that supports big changes — even if it means things are harder along the way.”
The Bigger Picture
The data from this latest poll shows the extent to which Biden’s mistakes are now coming back to haunt him. Then again, there is always the possibility that the former vice president will manage to weasel his way into winning the Democrat nomination. Some people have already hypothesized that the fix is in.
Regardless of which candidate goes on to represent the Democrat Party in 2020, they will not win a general election against President Trump. Democrats have very clearly communicated to Americans that left-wing agendas comprise socialism, higher taxes, and less prosperity. Furthermore, the Democrat Party’s rhetoric is not conducive to winning a general election which requires more than just votes from hardcore progressives.
