Yesterday, House Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez joined Bernie Sanders when he announced his plan to erase all student loan debt in America. Of course, Sanders’ plan involves hitting stocks and bonds with extra taxes which are designed to garner $2 trillion dollars over a ten year period.
When Ocasio-Cortez joined Sanders, she had her own remarks to share regarding her own student loans, as documented by Fox News.
Reviewing AOC’s Commentary on Student Loans
By Ocasio-Cortez’s own admission, she had an easier time being elected as a congresswoman than paying off her student loan debt. The congresswoman’s remarks were delivered in an appeal to gain support for Sanders’ proposal for erase all student loan debt by taxing Wall Street.
In AOC’s own words:
“I will disclose my personal stake in this fight because I have student loans too. And I think it’s so funny that a year ago, I was waiting tables at a restaurant and it was literally easier for me to become the youngest woman in American history elected to Congress than it is to pay off my student loan debt. So that should tell you everything about the state of this economy and the state of quality of life for working people.”
Addressing Student Loan Debt
The plight of student loan debt is very real. However, the plight does not justify hiking taxes and getting other people to foot the bill for student loans which they did not take out. When an individual elects to borrow money from the government to attend college, they’re doing that with the stipulation that they will pay the money back.
We live in a day and age where there are options other than taking out student loans to attend college. People can get scholarships, attend a trade school, or even start a business. Student loans are not the only path to obtaining higher education and it’s not anyone else’s job to foot the bill for student loans which they didn’t take out.
